Which Way Should I Go? Learning to Navigate Life When the Road Gets Confusing

By Pastor Gordon Godfrey | Marcus Pointe Baptist Church

Let’s be honest—finding your way isn’t always as simple as plugging an address into GPS. Trust me, I learned that the hard way not long ago while picking up my son from the Dallas airport.

I was trying to be a good dad. He was flying in a little later than me, so I figured I’d grab the rental car, find the terminal, and be waiting like a hero outside the Delta exit. Sounds like a solid plan, right?

Well, the GPS in the car wasn’t cooperating. I’m sure it had nothing to do with user error—just a faulty system, obviously. So I called in backup: Siri. Or as I like to call her—just to get under my daughter’s skin—“Sirius.” I asked her to guide me to the Delta terminal. She did... in a circle. A literal circle.

I looped around so many times I started waving at the construction workers every time I passed. They waved back. We were basically friends by the fifth lap.

After 20 minutes of pointless detours, I broke the unspoken man code. I pulled over and asked for directions. From a woman. I was one apologetic wave away from officially forfeiting my man card. But you know what? She got me there. And I picked up my son just as he walked out of the terminal. Perfect timing—he never knew the chaos.

Life's Like That Sometimes

That little misadventure stuck with me. It’s funny in hindsight, but also kind of profound. Sometimes in life, we’re doing our best to move in the right direction—and still end up circling the same construction cones over and over.

So how do you know which way to go when life’s path isn't clearly marked? What happens when the signs are missing, the GPS is glitching, and you’re just hoping you’re not wasting time?

Let’s talk about three tried-and-true directions that will never steer you wrong.

1. The Jesus Way: The Only Path to Salvation

There are a lot of roads in life, but not all of them lead to the right destination. In John 14:6, Jesus makes a bold claim:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

He’s not just one way among many. He’s the way. The only road that leads to heaven. That may sound exclusive, but it’s also freeing. You don’t have to wander, guessing what’s good enough. You just follow the One who already walked the road for you.

Trying to earn your way into heaven by being “good enough” is like trying to build a bridge with popsicle sticks. No matter how hard you try, it won’t hold the weight. Only Jesus can.

2. The Forgiveness Way: Learning to Let Go

We all miss the mark. The Bible calls it sin—stepping over the line, missing the bullseye of what God wants for us. But in Isaiah 43:25, God says:

“I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.”

He doesn’t just forgive. He forgets.

And yet, many of us struggle not with God’s forgiveness, but our own. We live under the weight of guilt long after we’ve been set free.

If God has forgiven you, isn’t it time you forgave yourself?

Maybe you’re like the woman at the well—ashamed of your past but ready for a future. Or maybe like the woman caught in adultery—hoping for grace but expecting judgment. Jesus didn’t excuse their sin, but He did forgive it. And then He invited them to live free.

Forgiveness isn’t just about eternity. It’s about peace now. It’s about refusing to let your past define your future.

3. The Bible Way: Let God’s Word Light the Path

Psalm 119:105 says,

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

Picture this: In ancient times, travelers wore tiny lamps on their sandals. They didn’t light the whole road—just enough to take the next step. That’s what Scripture does. It may not give you a five-year plan, but it’ll give you clarity for today.

The Bible isn’t just a spiritual textbook. It’s a roadmap. It's divine GPS. Unlike Siri, it won’t lead you in circles.

But here’s the catch: it only works if you read it. If you internalize it. If you let the Holy Spirit “illuminate” it for you. That’s the beautiful thing—God doesn’t just write the directions, He helps you understand them.

So… Which Way Should I Go?

When life brings a fork in the road, remember this:

  • Trust the Jesus Way — He is the only way to heaven.
  • Walk the Forgiveness Way — receive grace and extend it to yourself and others.
  • Follow the Bible Way — it’s your light for the journey.
  •

And when you still feel unsure, cling to this promise from Proverbs 3:5–6:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.”

You won’t always understand the why. But you can always trust the Who.

So take the next step—even if it feels uncertain. God sees the whole map, even when you don’t.

And if you make a wrong turn? That’s okay. God’s got rerouting down to an art form.

Closing Thought:
Don’t let indecision keep you circling the same old road. Trust the One who knows the way. He’s not just giving directions—He’s walking it with you.

And maybe—just maybe—wave at a few people along the way.
