We’re started a brand-new series this past Sunday called “You Gotta Have Faith.”
And no, I’m not talking about just any kind of faith — I’m talking about faith in God.
Faith is more than a nice spiritual idea. When you make it a priority, it unlocks potential in your life that you’d never experience otherwise — potential for God to use you to do great things. But that only happens when you understand what faith is and make it part of your everyday life.
The truth is, not everyone has faith in God. Some people put their faith in themselves, their stuff, their accomplishments, or even other people. But real, lasting faith has one foundation: God Himself.
Where’s the Faith?
There’s an old commercial some of you will remember — Wendy’s asking, “Where’s the beef?” They were pointing out that their competitors were serving a lot of bun and not much meat.
Sometimes I think we could ask the same question about our lives: Where’s the faith? Is it a main ingredient, or is it barely there, hidden under all the “bun” of busyness, distraction, and self-reliance?
Life moves fast. If we’re not careful, faith — the very thing that should be our foundation — can get pushed to the margins. But Hebrews 11:6 gives us a wake-up call:
“Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for the one who comes to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him.”
Faith isn’t optional. It’s essential. And it starts with building your life on the right foundation.
Building on the Right Foundation
Jesus told a story about two men who built houses — one on sand, the other on solid rock. The storms hit both, but only one stood firm.
The difference? Foundation.
If you’re building your life on money, popularity, relationships, or even religious activity, you’re building on sand. The only unshakable foundation is faith in God through Jesus Christ — trusting the One who died for your sins, rose again, and offers eternal life.
Three Marks of Faith in God
1. Faith is believing what you can’t see.
Hebrews 11:1 says,
“Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
You can’t see God with your physical eyes, but you can see the results of His work — lives transformed, marriages restored, addictions broken, hope renewed. Just like you can’t see electricity but you can see the lights turn on, you can’t see God, but you can see the change He brings.
2. Faith is obeying and trusting when you don’t understand.
Sometimes God doesn’t give us the full roadmap — just the next turn. Like a GPS, He often shows us one step at a time.
Noah had never seen rain, yet he built an ark.
Abraham was told to pack up and go without knowing the destination.
They didn’t understand everything — but they trusted and obeyed anyway.
3. Faith is persisting when you don’t feel like it.
There will be days you’re tired, discouraged, or ready to give up. That’s when faith becomes perseverance.
Moses endured hardship, criticism, and wilderness wandering because he kept his eyes on the invisible God.
Sometimes it’s easier to find faith than to live it out. But if you keep walking, keep trusting, keep doing the right thing, you might be closer to God’s breakthrough than you realize.
Final Thought
Faith isn’t just for emergencies. It’s not a backup plan when life gets hard. It’s the foundation for how you live every single day.
You might not see God, you might not understand His plan, and you might not feel like pressing on — but remember:
You gotta have faith.
Faith that believes.
Faith that obeys.
Faith that persists.
